We propose a conceptual synthesis of art and museums between the 19th and 21st century, tracing some lines that are in our opinion basic in the selection and communication processes of museums, when art was confronted with changes brought by capitalism. To understand what means a new paradigm in the organization of the artistic knowledge through archival logic and not of museums, we propose the analysis of the Archive-Museum CSAC (Study Center and Archive of Communication) at the University of Parma, which has about 12 million objects (in the archival sense) in its collections. Since 1968, when it was conceived and structured, CSAC has been representing a pioneer proposal in the reflection on knowledge in the artistic field.
