In the English-speaking world, the prescriptivism that used to prevail has been replaced with descriptivism in both reference works and school systems. The recent evolution of bibliographic description reflects this tendency, favouring an approach that is more and more descriptive and further away from the former prescriptivism that was at the root of the description standards. This paper pays tribute to Otlet’s work by linking his efforts to reach towards a universal bibliography to the prescriptivism that characterizes the French-language approach regarding the use of language, which has been instrumental in developing the international standards used in information organization.

Le contrôle bibliographique entre normativisme et descriptivisme Alexandre Fortier (alexandre.fortier@mail.mcgill.ca), Université McGill, École des sciences de l’information Grant Campbell (gcampbel@uwo.ca), University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Information and Media Studies Résumé En linguistique, l’approche normative où sont énoncées prescriptions et proscriptions s’oppose à l’approche descriptive où sont plutôt exposés les usages des locuteurs.
