Les messages qu\u2019il transmet \u00e0 un auditoire plus ou moins public selon les endroits o\u00f9 ils se trouvent marquent en permanence \u2014 tout en \u00e9tant modifiables et effa\u00e7ables \u2014 la peau de celui qui le porte. Ce projet examine le tatouage en tant que document. Pour d\u00e9finir le \u00ab document \u00bb, le questionnement se porte d\u00e9sormais sur la construction sociale de son sens, la perception de celui qui l\u2019examine et sur sa transmission d\u2019information. La compl\u00e9mentarit\u00e9 d\u2019un aspect mat\u00e9riel, d\u2019un aspect mental et d\u2019un aspect social sert de cadre conceptuel \u00e0 l\u2019analyse. Les donn\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 collect\u00e9es par le biais de 18 entrevues en profondeur o\u00f9 des adultes tatou\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9es \u00e0 parler de l\u2019histoire de chacun de leurs tatouages, des \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui les composent et du choix de leur localisation. Une attention particuli\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 apport\u00e9e au sens transmis par le tatouage au moment de sa cr\u00e9ation par rapport \u00e0 celui donn\u00e9 aujourd\u2019hui. Les 88 tatouages pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s servent d\u2019unit\u00e9s d\u2019analyse et ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 examin\u00e9s par une analyse de contenu bas\u00e9e sur la th\u00e9orisation ancr\u00e9e. Les aspects mental et social se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s plus pertinents pour d\u00e9terminer la documentalit\u00e9 du tatouage. L\u2019analyse de l\u2019aspect mental du tatouage indique que les participants distinguent nettement les tatouages porteurs de sens de ceux r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 des fins purement esth\u00e9tiques, et que les deux types peuvent cohabiter. Elle souligne \u00e9galement, pour ceux porteurs de sens, l\u2019importance de la conservation de l\u2019aspect original du tatouage, m\u00eame lorsque visuellement mal-aim\u00e9 ou associ\u00e9 \u00e0 de mauvais souvenirs. L\u2019analyse de l\u2019aspect social se divise en deux sous-aspects : le choix de l\u2019emplacement et celui des \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui, r\u00e9unis, composent une strat\u00e9gie de communication m\u00fbrement r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tattoos are considered to be a non-verbal communication means for which the sense varies from one person to another. Messages transmitted by tattoos to an audience differs according to their localization permanently marked\u2014while being alterable or erasable\u2014the skin of those who wear them. This project examines tattoos as documents. To define the \u00ab document \u00bb, the questioning has now shifted to the social construction of its meaning, the viewer\u2019s perception of the significance\u2009and the evidential character. The complementarity of material, mental and social aspects is used as a framework for the analysis. Data were collected though 18 in-depth interviews where tattooed adults were asked to talk about the story behind each of their tattoos, the visual elements and the choice of localization. Special attention was given to the initial meaning of respondent\u2019s tattoo and whether it had changed over time. The 88 tattoos described were used as units of analysis and have been examined though content analysis based on a grounded theory approach. The mental and social aspects were deemed more pertinent to determine the documentality of tattoos. The analysis of the mental aspect indicated that participants make a clear distinction between meaningful tattoos and those that are purely aesthetic; and that these two kinds can cohabit. It also highlighted the importance of maintaining the original aspects of the meaningful tattoos, even if their bearers do not like them anymore, or if it they are associated with some bad memories.
