Estivals in 1962 led him to approach to the emerging Information and Communication Science (ICS) alongside G. Matoré, J.-C. Gaudy, G. Gauthier, and A. Moles. In this interdisciplinary stimulating context, he developed an original and innovative theory, Graphical semiology (1967), in order to make effective the language of the map and its act of visualization. What are the influences of ICS in this research and what can be retained for the analysis of the map document? Following the steps of founders of ICS, such as J. Meyriat and J. Bertin leads a scientific development on the perception, the transmission of information, the capacities of the graphic representations to communicate. Bertin was one of the first researchers who formulated the reception of the map document as a mediation by introducing the semiotics applied to the ICS. He observed the maps through their appropriation, was interested in the articulation between elaboration and uses, until influencing the factory by intention by selecting the most relevant information components and classifying them visually. He based on semiotics to adjust the graphic discourse to the perceptive capacities of the receiver and thus optimizes the info-communicationial means that is the card. For him, the act of visualization of the card was an act of communication, introducing the possibility of interrogating its modes of reception. Bertin’s contribution in ICS is therefore situated on the exploitation of the map not only for what it is but also for what it holds in terms of contextual information. The attempt to understand what the user makes of the map, allows to characterize it as a document by intention, to learn about the diversity of meanings that men produce, in a documentary mediation perspective.

Keywords: Graphical semiology – Semiology and ICS – Act of visualization, act of communication – Transmission and reception of the map document – Perceptive capacities of the receiver

Jacques Bertin, chercheur en SIC malgré lui ?
