De la modernité d’Eugène Morel, figure marquante de la documentation, pionnier de la modernisation des bibliothèques

Résumé
Parmi les pionniers francophones, reconnus pour leur contribution à la bibliothéconomie, et leur influence sur l’évolution des bibliothèques, Eugène Morel occupe une place de choix. Ses travaux et ses réflexions, moins connus que ceux de grands noms comme Suzanne Briet ou Paul Otlet apparaissent d’une grande modernité aujourd’hui, dans le contexte actuel d’évolution des bibliothèques. Passeur entre deux mondes, inspiré par le modèle anglo-saxon de la « librairie publique », il est aussi un passeur entre deux époques, selon l’idée mise en avant par Georgette et Eric de Grolier dans l’hommage qu’ils lui rendent en1934, au moment de son décès. Situant son héritage intellectuel sur l’échelle du temps, ils distinguent deux périodes : celle d’avant Morel où les intérêts des sciences non historiques sont sacrifiés, et, plus encore, ceux du grand public ; et celle d’après, où un mouvement voit le jour en faveur de la bibliothèque publique et de la documentation. A travers cette contribution, c’est la pensée pionnière d’Eugène Morel qui est interrogée. Que nous dit une lecture de ses œuvres, au-delà des critiques portées sur son époque, des idées novatrices qu’il promeut, tirées de ses voyages ? Quels sont ses apports au monde de l’information-documentation ? Quelle est la résonance de ses apports aujourd’hui, alors que le monde des bibliothèques connaît de profonds bouleversements qui bousculent les modèles traditionnels ? Après avoir situé les travaux d’Eugène Morel dans leur époque pour mieux en comprendre la portée, nous étudierons quels sont les ressorts qui fondent leur modernité aujourd’hui : sa vision anticipatrice de l’évolution des bibliothèques (aujourd’hui bibliothèques troisième lieu ou learning centres) et le caractère fondateur de sa pensée bibliothéconomique (du livre au document, vers l’information ; nouveaux systèmes de diffusion de l’information).
About the modernity of Eugene Morel – a leading figure in documentation, a pioneer in the modernization of libraries

Abstract
Eugène Morel occupies a key position among the Francophone pioneers, recognized for their contribution to librarianship and their influence on the evolution of libraries. His works and his reflection, less known than those of the leading figures of documentation such as Suzanne Briet or Paul Otlet, are of a great modernity today, in the current context of changes in libraries. The intermediary between two worlds, inspired by the Anglo-Saxon model of the “public library”, Morel was also a go-between bridging two eras, as Georgette and Eric de Grolier’s stated in the tribute they paid to him, when he died in 1934. They distinguished two periods, situating Morel’s intellectual heritage on the time scale: the one before Morel, when the interests of the non-historical sciences – and even more the interests of the general public – were sacrificed; and the period after Morel, when a movement for public library and documentation was born. In this paper, Eugene Morel’s pioneering thought will be explored. Apart from many criticisms of his time, what does his works tell us about the innovative ideas he promoted, drawn from his travels? What is his contribution to the world of information-documentation? How is his contribution resonating today, while the world of libraries is experiencing deep changes that challenge the traditional models? To better understand this scope today, we first situate Eugene Morel’s works in his time; and then we study the elements that prove their modernity: his forward-looking vision on the evolution of libraries (third-place libraries; learning centres) as well as the seminal character of his thinking about the library (from book to document, towards information, new system for disseminating and sharing information).
